FIRE WISE SAFETY WEEK

National Fire Prevention Week is observed in the United States and Canada during the week (from Sunday to Saturday) in which October 9 falls. In the United States, the first presidential proclamation of Fire Prevention Week was made in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge, as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.

Conducting Fire Education:

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) continues to be the international sponsor of the week. Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. During Fire Prevention Week, the Vilonia Fire Department conducts fire safety education in all the elementary schools inside the city limits of Vilonia. The topics cover smoke detectors, fire escape plans, and fire prevention. Visit firepreventionweek.org for more information on Fire Prevention Week and fire prevention in general.
